We all know the images that come to mind when you think of iconic Australian destinations, the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, the Red Sand of the Australian Outback… These destinations are part of our country and celebrated as tourist destinations (and rightly so). However, you may be looking to avoid your fellow tourists on your campervan adventure. If so, we have compiled a list of our favourite underrated destinations in Australia. Perfect for those who are looking to take the road less travelled.
Hobart, Tasmania
Tasmania’s capital city is not like any other in Australia, often described as a smaller version of Melbourne without the crowds and traffic. Hobart is a laidback part of the world and is filled with historic buildings like the iconic Cascade Brewery. A visit to Hobart will give you the opportunity to savour Australia’s finest fresh produce, water and culture wherever you look. It is also home to Australia’s oldest operating theatre, the Theatre Royal where legends like Sir Laurence Olivier and Hobart’s own Errol Flynn once walked the boards.

Cradle Mountain, Tasmania
Tucked into the heart of the Lake St Clair National Park in Tasmania’s rugged Central Highlands is the iconic but often overlooked gem in Tasmania’s tourism crown, Cradle Mountain. The area is one of Australia’s best wilderness areas, with Cradle Mountain itself sitting at the base of Dove Lake offering some of the best bushwalking opportunities for all levels. For the more experienced bushwalker, the Overland Track is well worth booking into your itinerary. For those looking for something less daunting the Dove Lake track is well worth the time.
Note: The overland track is a serious walk for experienced bushwalkers only. To undertake the track, you need to pre-book a pass through the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service.

Bay of Fires, Tasmania
On Tasmania’s north-east coast lies the seaside town of Bay of Fires, known for its majestic beach where the pristine white sands are dotted with granite boulders covered in an orange lichen. The beach has been named as one of Australia’s top ten beaches and offers unforgettable photo opportunities. The area is a great destination for those wanting to disconnect and enjoy all that nature has to offer, including swimming and bushwalking.

Adelaide, South Australia
Adelaide is another capital city that is often left off the itinerary of those visiting Australia. With its mild year-round climate and pristine beaches Adelaide is a perfect destination no matter the time of year. For those who love to wander parks and gardens Adelaide is the perfect destination, as it has 29 parks and gardens on offer. It is also home to the world-renowned Barossa Valley with its fantastic red wines, most notably Shiraz.

Kangaroo Island, South Australia
If you know anything about Australia you would have already heard of the Kangaroo, as in the marsupial. However, there is another Kangaroo worth mentioning… Kangaroo Island. Australia’s third largest island offers a combination of spectacular views and breathtaking landscapes where you can enjoy fresh local seafood in the seaside villages before climbing the rocky terrain. Another attraction on Kangaroo Island is that you can witness the local penguins waddle up the shore after dusk while enjoying the clear starry night.

Newcastle, New South Wales
When you think of New South Wales you immediately think of Sydney Harbour and with its iconic bridge and Opera House. Newcastle is just a few hours away from these well-known landmarks and is well worth the visit for its fascinating history and laidback nightlife. You can also explore one of the eight spotless beaches and the quirky art scene. There truly is something for everyone in Newcastle.

Barunguba / Montague Island, New South Wales
Montague Island is a truly hidden gem in Australia, mostly unknown to the majority of the population. The island is jam-packed with fascinating sites including sites that are sacred to the local indigenous community. There is also the iconic granite lighthouse and multiple diving spots (some of which are home to grey nurse sharks). The best way to see everything that Montague Island has on offer is to take an eco-tour to see whales, seals and birds nesting on this truly unique destination.
